Strolling through Sitges, you're bound to come across ostentatious Modernist or Neoclassical houses from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, imbued with the Cuban essence of the period. This architectural style beautifies the streets of Sitges and arouses the curiosity of many.

But ... what has Sitges in common with Cuba?

When the Free Trade with America Act of 1778 came into force, decreed by King Carlos III, many young people from Sitges traveled to Cuba and other Spanish colonies with the intention of making a fortune.

Some succeeded in creating their own businesses and made great fortunes. Known as "Indians" or "Americans", at the outbreak of the Cuban war, many of them returned to become the new bourgeois class of Sitges. And that's when they built the luxurious houses and mansions that give Sitges that special touch that mixes the essence of the Mediterranean with the Caribbean in a harmony that makes Sitges a unique city.
